The Importance of Flexibility in My Life Beyond Numbers
Life Beyond Numbers. My work-life revolves around telling our DHG story which focuses on people, flexibility and careers. As the Corporate Communications Director for DHG, I have worked closely to help us develop our brand and most of my day is filled with telling others, both internally and externally, about DHG’s exceptional culture.
Sharing our focus on flexibility is second nature to me. However, I never really stopped to think about what it means to my life until recently.
Last week, I received the dreaded sick call from my daughter’s day care. AHHH…not the right time…first week back at work after the holiday…too much to do to get the year started. But alas, of course my child is my first priority so I dropped everything and headed out to care for her. The next day she was still sick. My daughter is 18 months old, and let me be the first to tell you, working from home with an 18 month old is IMPOSSIBLE. From pulling the dog around the house by his tail to dancing on the coffee table…I can’t walk away for a minute! You’ve seen the commercial of the child pulling the toilet paper off the role and running around the house…welcome to my world!
Luckily, DHG affords me the flexibility to do what I need to do for my family. I was able to reschedule meetings, work during her nap and after she went to bed that evening…which afforded me the opportunity for mommy snuggles and a 5pm tea party.
At the end of the long day, I took a moment to reflect on how special it is that I work for a firm that allows me to be flexible when I need to be. On the flip side, I do this with no guilt, because I am flexible for DHG when DHG needs me to work extended hours, weekends and go the extra mile to be creative and innovative for our people.
Thank you DHG for partnering with me to make my Life Beyond Numbers exceptional and flexible!
