DHG Strength in Numbers
I remember the call from my son Eric as if it were yesterday. “Mom just wanted to let you know that I have enlisted in the military and will be leaving for basic training in two weeks.” Almost speechless, I was able to utter “Son, you know we are at war right?” His reply “yes ma’am.” Unable to speak, I said goodbye.
In the Fall of 2010, he graduated from Ft. Benning and was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division at Ft Drum. In March 2011 the 1-32nd Infantry was deployed to Afghanistan for a year. The news of his deployment was shared with my DHG Partners and staff, and I enlisted their support and prayers for my son and for our family. Thirty days into Eric’s deployment, his troop engaged in enemy fire. This was only the beginning…. As a parent, brother, sister you can imagine my constant concern for his safety.
As a way to show DHG’s support of military families, including our own, the interns adopted a project that year to collect food and goods to send to Eric and his fellow soldiers in Afghanistan. My son shares the story of being called to the Sergeant Major’s office, who inquired of him, “who do you know?” as there were over 100 boxes all addressed to him. Eric’s reply was, “my mom and the people she works with.”
Today, as I write to share this with all of you, I still feel very emotional, honored and thankful to have the love and support of the great people here at DHG!
